Food
Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free food in Cape Verde
Short answer
Cape Verdean cooking is built on maize, beans, fish and meat, and the national dish, cachupa, usually contains meat or fish. No Cape Verdean authority publishes a vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free guide, and this page names no venue as safe for any diet: ask how each dish is made, every time.
What is in the classic dishes
The tourism board says cachupa always has maize as its base and comes in four main versions: cachupa rica, cachupa de atum, cachupa pobre and cachupa guisada. Cachupa rica is a stew with several meats — salted pork, beef, chicken, tuna, blood sausage and more — and cachupa guisada is usually eaten for breakfast with a fried egg and sausage on top.
The board names cachupa pobre but does not give its recipe, so ask whether a particular pot was made without meat, fish or animal fat. Other maize dishes it describes, such as djagacida from Fogo, include pork.

Easier wins for plant-based travellers
Fruit is everywhere: the board mentions purple bananas, papaya, mangoes, melons and juices including calabaceira (baobab). Coffee is grown on Santo Antão, Santiago and Fogo. The board praises local goat’s cheese — not vegan, and no source says whether it is made with animal rennet, so vegetarians should ask. The board also recommends local markets for fresh fruit, and suggests carrying escudos there.

Gluten and coeliac disease
Many traditional dishes are maize-based, but sauces, stocks, frying oil and kitchens are shared, and no Cape Verdean authority publishes a gluten-free or coeliac standard. Nothing on this page should be read as saying a dish or a venue is safe for coeliacs. Carry a written note in Portuguese, for example: “Tenho doença celíaca: não posso comer glúten (trigo, cevada, centeio, aveia).”

Food and water hygiene
The UK government says gastrointestinal illness remains a risk, as in other countries, and recommends good hand hygiene and following food and water precautions.
