The way back
Getting back in Cape Verde: planning the return leg
Short answer
Nothing in Cape Verde is a protected connection: buses do not wait for ferries, ferries do not wait for flights, and no operator publishes a last departure for the road. Aluguers are a morning service that thins out after the early afternoon; ferry tickets must be bought at least 1 h 30 before sailing and cannot be bought on board; no source we checked lists a scheduled bus at any airport. Fix the return before the outward trip, save it where you can read it offline, and keep a taxi or a bed as plan B.
Aluguers: treat them as a morning service
Nobody publishes when an aluguer runs, so the pattern is what you can learn locally: on Santiago the vans to the north fill fastest in the early morning and reverse in the early afternoon; on Fogo the 4x4s go up to Chã das Caldeiras in the morning and come down later in the day; on Santo Antão the last vehicles over the mountain go earlier than visitors expect, and a late boat can strand you in Porto Novo. The tourism board itself warns that in some areas the vans run only at certain times of the day. Ask the driver who takes you out when the last one comes back, and agree a pick-up if the answer is vague.

Ferries: the return is a separate ticket and a separate deadline
CV InterIlhas sells tickets at least 1 h 30 before departure and not on board, and check-in closes an hour before sailing with a photo ID that matches the ticket. Buy the return leg with the outward one, because sailings are published date by date and not every line runs every day. If a sailing is delayed more than three hours the operator owes you a meal; if it changes a sailing for force majeure and you decline, your fare is refunded. CVsky is the air fallback for some islands, and a ferry ticket does not transfer to it. The UK government warns that sea travel to Brava and Fogo can often be disrupted: never put a same-day flight after a ferry.

City buses: Praia publishes lines, Mindelo publishes nothing
Sol Atlântico publishes Praia’s lines and stops and a real-time map, but no Sunday timetable and no last-departure table, so read the map on the day and do not count on a late bus. In Mindelo, Transcor SV’s buses run but nothing about them could be verified online; the tourism board counts two night routes among São Vicente’s buses without saying which days. Ask at the stop, and keep the fare for a taxi.

If you miss it
The fallback everywhere is a taxi: the UK government advises authorised taxis from a rank or called by your hotel, blue and yellow on Sal and Boa Vista, and the tourism board says to agree the fare before you set off. Avoid unlit and isolated areas after dark. Where a taxi is not realistic, a bed is: Porto Novo, Chã das Caldeiras and Tarrafal all have places to stay. For a flight, no source we checked lists a scheduled airport bus; the late-arrival guide covers transfers booked ahead.

Questions travellers ask
What time is the last aluguer back?
Nobody publishes it, on any island. The vans leave when full and thin out after the early afternoon; ask the driver on the way out, and treat a late return as something to arrange, not to expect.

Can I buy the ferry ticket for the way back on board?
No. Tickets are sold at least 1 h 30 before departure, online or through the agents, never on board, and check-in closes an hour before sailing.

Is there a night bus anywhere?
The tourism board counts two night routes among São Vicente’s buses, with operating hours published there but no day-of-week detail, and no source names a night bus elsewhere. Plan the evening around a taxi.
